Mirena is an intrauterine device that releases small amounts of levonorgestrel locally into the uterus. Made of soft, flexible plastic, Mirena is placed in uterus by the doctor during an office visit. Mirena was approved by FDA (USA) for intrauterine contraception. It also treats heavy periods.
Kyleena 19.5 mg is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy for up to 5 years. Replace the system after 5 years if continued use is desired. The dose of hormones (levonorgestrel) is different. Mirena contains a higher amount of hormone than Kyleena. Side effects are similar.
